Reduce Reuse and Recycle for the New Year

If you're anything like me you probably have a wardrobe packed full of clothes you never wear, you know the ones, those shorts you swore you'd shrink into for summer and that dress that is so sheer it's almost transparent(but looks great with a slip or over leggings according to the shop assistant). Do you stare at your wardrobe with fashion mishaps, clothes you've outgrown and swing-tag-still-attached numbers looking back at you, wondering how on earth am I going to fit my brand new summer buys in there?

The answer is here my fashion fiends -
Hold a stall at Take 2 Markets, Melbourne’s premier recycled fashion event. Turn your trash into someone elses treasure and get some coin for your preloved items and mistake purchases.

The next market is being held Sunday 20th March at Hawthorn town hall and you can book a stall from Wednesday 1st December at 10am.

Get in quick because these are the hottest tickets in town, last time they booked out in under 2 hours (that's quicker than Big Day Out!). Visit www.take2markets.com.au
for more information.

And since you've cleared all this space in your cupboard you may as well check out some of the other stalls, who knows what cute vintage pieces, one-offs and designer finds might be waiting.

Fashion Journal 100th Edition Party

A big thanks to all our sponsors, everyone who came & all those people who helped us get to 100 issues

Fashionistas and fashion-misters flocked to the heart of Fitzroy Street, St Kilda to the luscious and brand spanking new venue Pretty Please. Welcomed with Capi fruit soda & 666 Vodka cocktails that kept flowing all night, everyone got a bit silly with Kirin Beers and Four Sisters Wines also helping to quench thirsts.

The head turningly handsome crowd danced the night away to music from the equally as handsome DJ's - Generik, The Bad Cats and Post Percy who played a retrosexual mix of party hymns that transformed even the highest heels into dancing shoes.

The hottest chick on the night came in mini pequeno burgers, wraps and other moreish morsels thanks to Nandos catering. Dessert included a delicious array of Trampoline gelato with flavours like passionfruit, blood orange and chocolate hitting our lips.

It was 100 issues in the making and a night that's sure to be remembered for the next 100 issues to come!

Look out for the photos in the next edition of Fashion Journal out December 3rd or go to beat.com.au to see the photos now!

Retro Queen

Rockabilly became popular in the 50s because of its sexy, laid-back style. Sixty years later and it's still gracing our streets and there is a new store in town for your favourite pin-up threads.

You can try to sew a tulle petticoat and irresistible cherry dress but as the owner of Gasoline Queen, Natasha Sayers, found, it's not that easy! Instead we suggest you step away from the sewing machine and head to Gasoline Queen at 25 Bridge Rd, Richmond, Melbourne, to browse affordable and good quality psychobilly, rockabilly and pin-up trends for gals and guys.

Gasoline queen stocks labels from the US, Mexico, the UK and Australia. Their super range includes clothing, accessories, shift knobs, shrunken heads, day of the dead figurines, prints and homewares. So if you’re feeling like a bit of a change, pop on in to get yourself kitted out with a new rad look! (03) 9427 9024. Open Tuesday – Sunday.

Be as quirky as you want in 2010

A quick Google search informed me of the best shopping destinations in Sydney, or so they say. The Queen Victoria Building, The Strand Arcade and Skygarden were the top rankers, but here at FJ we've got another place up our sleeves. Best of all you won't end up looking like you've walked out of a chain store advertisement.

Love 2010 is an initiative by the 2010 Business Partnership and City of Sydney to shop on 'The Other Side of Sydney' and make Darlinghurst and Surrey Hills your new shopping destination. We're completely on board with this initiative as we can't get over the fact that in one short stroll we can find a whip, a pair of Aussie Bums for our boyfriends, become a 40s Vargas girl, indulge in spandex and leather, or become a nostalgic retro princess. To learn more about the freaky yet strangely fabulous shopping in postcode 2010 then head to www.love2010.com.au

Handmade heaven at the North Melbourne Market's Spring Fling - this Sunday!

Run monthly in the Lithuanian Club at 44 Errol St, North Melbourne, The North Melbourne Market is a veritable gold mine of never to be seen again vintage, local designer and hand made products. Appearing for four hours on a Sunday, the returning from whence it came, the North Melbourne Market is a floor-to-ceiling bonanza.

And this week is the annual Spring Fling.

North Melbourne Market is a rockstar market; stalls were sold out by dawn on application day. And this is why it continues to gain popularity in the underground market circles. Underground is not too far from the truth. With a labyrinthine journey through the ballroom, the famous “Underbelly” lobby, the upstairs, the downstairs and the in-between, it's a trip not short on surprises.

Pop in to chat with the designers, play with their precious offerings and pick up some handmade delights. Spend hours wandering the stalls that sell vintage fabrics and clothing, sweet treats, local designer clothing, kids head-to-toe cute stuff, handmade jewellery, homewares, artists’ creations and other particularly and peculiarly unique things you’ve never seen before. Divine!

The market is open 10am - 2pm and entry is $2.

See you there!!

Fashion on the Farm

Yesterday the FJ team trekked out to Gembrook to a location more fit for gumboots than stilettos! Photographer Ed Purnomo led the herd to a setting of tractors, trucks and hay bails – bringing city chic to the country, with a bunch of cows as our eager audience.

Catherine D from Scene Models made the perfect little girl on the prairie battling spider infested trucks, hay bails and climbing in crates of potatoes to get the perfect shot. Thanks to stylist Jam Baylon for creating the farmer-esque fashions, Jamie and Joel from Xiang for their scarecrow hair styling and Monica for her magnificent make-up.

Lust Have Summer Handbags from Her Ego

This summer, the Her Ego Carnivale Summer Range takes the plunge into deep-water blues, starry-night blacks and delicious ice-cream ivory.

Studs and chains remain de rigueur and are interwoven into the fabric of the leather to feature unobtrusively.

Elephant-patterned sheep leather is prominent this summer in several styles, which is so luxurious it feels like the softest of fabrics.

Blue and black denim acid-looks are shades of summer in this must-have style.

But you can always trust the Her Ego brand to remain true to its boho origins, now flavoured with luxurious fabrics and outstandingly sensual leathers.

The Her Ego Carnivale Summer Range also comprises a new look nautical denim everyday bag, perfect for those warm summer days at the beach!

To view the full range check out www.herego.com.au and for stockist enquiries phone (03) 9840 2939.

Master Makeup

Today the FJ team indulged in a Master Makeup class with makeup artist Dean Nixon. Dean has over fourteen years experience in the fashion and cosmetic industries, and a celebrity clientele list that includes Delta Goodrum, Kristy Hinze, Miranda Kerr and Elizabeth Hurley. After a two hour makeup session learning the tricks of the trade we left feeling just as glamourous as the models and celebrities Dean usually works with.

Dean tailored the class to each individual person, picking colours to match our unique complexions and special techniques that enhance our own special features. We brought along our own makeup collections and tools so we could learn how to work better with what we've already got. Sheepishly we emptied our makeup cases to reveal years of bad makeup habits, including my foundation brush which unbeknown to me would be more effective in beating someone than actually applying foundation!

We then bared face for our colleagues, scrubbing off the veil we wear everyday and hydrating our skin. Dean started these classes so he could share his passion and knowledge with everyday women like us, he's not trying to sell us anything so we actually listen when he recommends we purchase a primer. Now our canvas is primed we can begin work on the masterpiece! Starting off with a more natural daytime look, Dean shared product tips and specialised application techniques to ensure flawless skin. We then worked our look into something more bold for night when Dean taught us foolproof steps for the perfect smoky eye.

We all left with radiant skin and a new head turning look, each person different from the rest, with a shopping list in mind and a new outlook on our habitual morning makeup routine. I vow to buy a primer, hydrate my skin, colour match my foundation, clean my brushes, use a splash of colour and thou shalt never sleep in my makeup again – no matter how big a night I've had!

Steve Madden Store Opening

Last Saturday the FJ team and our friends from BeatTV attended the Steve Madden store opening at Doncaster.

Left: The awesome goodie bags were a massive hit!

BeatTV caused a stir with their general randomness and filmed this week's episode at the opening. Check it out here: www.beattv.com.au. There's a bit of something for everyone - cross dressing, shoes, music, meaningless dribble and politics.

Left: Dan from Beat TV getting his make-up done by the lovely girls at Gorgeous Cosmetics

Below left: Nick from Beat TV with Mattia from Steve Madden

At the opening lots of gorgeous young hopefuls turned up to enter the Steve Madden and FJ model search. The winner, who will be announced next week will win a double page photo shoot in the September issue of Fashion Journal.

Big thanks also to our awesome FJ photographer Ed Purnomo!

Below: Some of the beautiful contestants, Keep an eye on the Steve Madden facebook page to see all the model search entrants.
